The Slovak National Uprising began on 29 August 1944 (during World War II) as a revolt against the entry of the German Wehrmacht into the territory of the Slovak Republic. It was the military uprising of the domestic resistance, whose center was city Banská Bystrica in Central Slovakia.

The Influence of Slovak National Uprising on postwar development in Slovakia and the need to document and to maintain documentation on the active participation of Slovaks in fight against fascism, the need to maintain documentation about terror, victims and losses that caused nazium to humanity in World War II  led to the establishment of the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising. The SNP Memorial in Banská Bystrica is also a significant memorial place where official celebrations are held every year at the end of August.

The current exhibition at the area of Memorial of the Slovak National Uprising in city Banská Bystrica was made accessible to the public on August 27, 2004, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Slovak National Uprising. The exhibition called "Slovakia in the Anti-Fascist Movement of Europe in 1939-1945" presents the decisive political, military and social events of the history of Slovakia in the context with the history of Europe in years 1918-1948. It is the thematic, with content and material the largest exposure of the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising. Thanks to the interactive form of presentation of content using computer technologies, it is one of the most modern expositions in Europe.
