Štiavnica Mountains (Štiavnické vrchy) is a volcanic mountain range in central Slovakia, in Region Banska Bystrica (Banskobystrický kraj) - districts Banská Štiavnica, Žarnovica, Žiar nad Hronom, Zvolen, Krupina) and in Region Nitra (Nitriansky kraj) - district Levice. Highest peak of Štiavnica Mountains is Sitno (1 009,2 m. n. m.). Štiavnica Mountains are an immense caldera created by the collapse of an ancient volcano. Due to their volcanic origin, they are mineral-rich, with around 140 kinds of minerals. In the past, silver mining flourished in the area around the historical town of Banská Štiavnica. Very popular are tajchs (artificial water reservoirs), they are extremely popular among local as well as other visitors.
