The capital of the region is city Banská Bystrica, according to the population 78 484 (31.12.207) the fifth largest city in Slovakia. Region Banska Bystrica has area 9 454,01 km2  and population 649 788 (31.12.2017). Region Banska Bystrica borders on Region Nitra (Nitriansky kraj), Region Trenčín (Trenčiansky kraj), Region Žilina (Žilinský kraj), Region Presov (Prešovský kraj) and Region Košice (Košický kraj), on Hungary in south. The territory of the region has a mountainous and foothill character, a small part has lowland character in the south. The capital of the region is city Bratislava - capital of Slovak Republic, according to the population 429 564 (31.12.2017) the largest city in Slovakia. Region Bratislava has area 2 052,62 km2 and population 650 838 (31.12.2017). Region Bratislava is located in western Slovakia, borders on Austria, Hungary and Region Trnava (Trnavský kraj). The capital of the region is city Košice, according to the population 239 095 (31.12.2017) the second largest city in Slovakia. Region Košice has area 6 754,32 km2 and population 799 217 (31.12.2017). Western part of the region has mountain and foothill character. The capital of the region is city Nitra, according to the population 77 048 (31.12.2017) the sixth largest city in Slovakia. Region Nitra has area 6 343,73 km2 and population 678 692 (31.12.2017). Nitra Region borders on  Region Trnava (Trnavský kraj) in the west, Region Trenčín (Trenčiansky kraj) in the north and Region Banska Bystrica (Banskobystrický kraj) in the east. The region borders on Region Bratislava (Bratislavský kraj), Region Trenčín (Trenčiansky kraj), Region Nitra (Nitriansky kraj) and three states -  Austria, Czech Republic and Hungary.
