1. In term of territorial division


Regions - the territory is divided into 8 regions, the regions are divided into districts
Districts - on the territory of Slovakia there are 79 districts divided into 8 regions
Municipalities - in the territory of Slovakia there are 2 888 municipalities, of which 140 are cities

2. In term of territorial self-government - regional self-government division


According to legislation, regional units (self-governing regional units) and administrative units were created for the accomplishment of the state administration:

a) Regional division - regional units (self-governing regional units)

Regional units (self-governing regional units) are:
 
  • Self-Governing Regions (higher territorial units)
  • Municipalities

Self-Governing Regions (higher territorial units)

The territory is divided into 8 Self-Governing Regions. Self-Governing Region is the highest self-governing unit in Slovakia. Each district in the region has a representation in the regional council by population.  The territorial area of the Self-Governing Region is identical to the territorial area of the region.

The Self-Governing Region of Trenčín (Bratislavský samosprávny kraj)
The Self-Governing Region of  Trnava (Trnavský samosprávny kraj)
The Self-Governing Region of  Trenčín (Trenčiansky samosprávny kraj)
The Self-Governing Region of Nitra (Nitriansky samosprávny kraj)
The Self-Governing Region of Žilina (Žilinský samosprávny kraj)
The Self-Governing Region of Banská Bystrica (Banskobystrický samosprávny kraj)
The Self-Governing Region of  Košice (Košický samosprávny kraj)
The Self-Governing Region of Prešov (Prešovský samosprávny kraj)

Municipalities
The municipality is a basic self-government unit in Slovakia.

b) Administrative division - administrative units

Administrative units are regions and districts. The regions are divided into districts. Administrative units are also municipalities and military districts, in case they under special laws perform the state administration.
