Castle Gýmeš Gýmeš Castle was built in the 13th century on the site of an old fortified settlement (wooden castle), which was on a raised hill Dúň in the Tríbeč Mountains. The castle is located in the Nitra region, 5 km from the village Jelenec in the district of Nitra.

Additional towers, palaces and fortifications were added to the original castle in the 13th - 17th centuries, and it gradually became an extensive castle. The castle was destroyed and restored several times during this period.

In the 16th century, the Turks tried several times to conquer Gýmeš Castle, they succeeded in 1576 and destroyed Gýmeš Castle. After the peasant uprising in 1610, which was suppressed, the castle was repaired by Žigmund Forgáč (the castle was owned by the Forgáč family at that time).

The castle was destroyed again in 1618, when Žigmund Forgáč fought against the Transylvanian prince Gabriel Betlen who depredated and fired it. Subsequently Žigmund Forgáč repaired and re-furnished the castle with the help of Tekov County.

In the middle of the 17th century, the castle was again destroyed by the Turks and subsequently restored. On Gýmeš continued construction works even in the 18th century, but in the middle of the 19th century the owners left the castle and castle began to disintegrate.

The Castrum Ghymes Civic Association, which has been operating at Gýmeš Castle since 2011, is currently working on the restoration of the castle. The association focuses on working with volunteers or students of archeology, history and architecture under the guidance of experts and under the supervision of the Regional Monuments Board of the Slovak Republic.
